Outage In Ariz. Knocks Out County Power

Utility crews are working to restore power after following a major outage that has left the San Diego area, parts of Orange County and Mexico in the dark.According to SDG&E, the outage originated in Arizona and caused both of its major electrical connections to the region to trip off. In addition to knocking out power to much of San Diego County, the outage also affected people in Mexico, Baja California, the Coachella Valley in Riverside County and southern Orange County. The cause of the outage was not immediately known, although SDG&E officials said the recent hot weather meant there was a lot of strain on the system, and that could have contributed to the problem.Customers should expect to be without power for hours, possibly through the night and into Friday. The transmission outage cut the flow of imported power into the most southern portion of California, resulting in wide-spread outages in the region," according to Cal ISO."The ISO is coordinating with SDG&E as well as neighboring utilities including Southern California (Edison) and utilities in Arizona and Mexico, during restoration of service, which is being managed by SDG&E."County officials said deputies, police and fire personnel are on duty.San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials are urging residents to stay indoors and to limit phone use.Bernard Gonzales of the Chula Vista Police Department is urging citizens to not visit local emergency rooms unless they are in need of urgent care.According to Gonzales, emergency rooms in Chula Vista are being flooded with people who are not in need of immediate assistance.
