21-year-old woman waiting for liver at Cleveland Clinic dies after transplant surgery

Feb 18, 2013

The 21-year-old Ohio woman in need of a liver transplant died Monday afternoon.

Chelsea Lingenfelter was diagnosed with a rare kind of liver cancer at the age of 4 and received a partial transplant from her mother. But over the years, complications left the organ scarred and damaged, meaning only a full-size liver would help.

"I've just been really waiting a long time," she said earlier this month from her room at the Cleveland Clinic, where she spent more than a year. Family and friends calling themselves “Team Chelsea” organized fundraisers on her behalf. “I’m so thankful… It’s amazing.

The family received an offer for a liver and got the all-clear that it was a perfect match Monday morning. She went into surgery at about 10 a.m.

"While we are ecstatic at the possibilities, we are also humbled that none of this would be possible if there wasn't a family out there suffering with the loss of a loved one. Our hearts, prayers, and deepest gratitude go out to them as we begin our long night of worry and anticipation," the family posted on her website .

Chelsea’s mother, Joni Lingenfelter, knew that in order for her daughter to survive, another family would have to experience a loss.

"We're hoping to find maybe a family in a horrible situation for themselves right now that maybe have already made that decision for themselves that yes, they want to be an organ donor," she told NewsChannel5’s Deb Lee in early February. "And if they would happen to be O negative blood type and small body stature, if they would consider possibly donating the liver directly to Chelsea."

Chelsea died at 2:43 p.m. on Monday, her family said.

Nationally, more than 116,000 people are waiting for organ transplants. For more information about organ donation, go to http://lifebanc.org

Chelsea Lingenfelter is a 21-year-old beautiful, intelligent, young lady. As a high school student, she studied many languages, took college classes, and dreamed of traveling the world. After graduating, she enrolled in college, moved into a dorm, and started to realize her dreams. Sadly, after just 2 ½ months, her liver began to fail and Chelsea found herself in the hospital in October of 2011.
At the age of 4, Chelsea was diagnosed with liver cancer, at which time she received 40 rounds of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries to become cancer free. Although she was in remission, her liver had taken a beating and she needed a transplant. At age 7, she received a partial transplant donation from her mother.
Over the years, this liver has become hardened and not fully functional and she finds herself in need of another transplant-- but this liver needs to be fully intact, not a partial donation this time.
A match has been difficult to find due to the specifications needed and the delicate nature of the situation -- the donor must have blood type O- and be a small adult or child.
Chelsea has been on the waiting list at The Cleveland Clinic for over a year and now time is of the essence. The wait has taken its toll on her body. Her kidneys have been working overtime to make up for her failing liver, and she now requires temporary dialysis so that her kidneys may rest and have some relief until she may be blessed with a liver donation.
What we are asking is very difficult for us... If anyone knows of a person whose last wishes are to donate their organs when their time has come .....this is the difficult part.... we ask if the family would consider having their loved one's liver be donated directly to this courageous young lady: Chelsea Lingenfelter, at The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Please, please call 1-304-914-8227 to have their loved one live on through Chelsea. If you know of someone with O negative blood type who is the size of a young adult or child, please, we ask for your generous donation as a potential match for Chelsea. Please be a part of this wonderful gift of life.
Becky, some stuff on Chelsea for the public.....She is fabulously funny using her dry sarcasm humor .
She loves to sing and dance. She is a fabulous cook and invents great recipes.
Chelsea attended college while in 11th and 12th grade of high school and moved into a dorm after graduating high school . Her college days sadly, only lasted 2 1/2 months when her liver began to fail in Oct. 2010.
She just wants to return to college and the chance at a normal life as any young person would. She has goals in life that have yet to be achieved.

More people should become organ donors before they pass. I am one! If they can find anything any good left!
