First Photograph Of Jon Hammar, Marine Jailed In Mexico On “Trumped Up Charges”

The first photo of imprisoned Marine, Jon Hammar from his Mexican jail cell shows him with shackles on his leg. The image was sent to Hammar’s family from an anonymous email account. Fox News Latino reported the email read: “I found your email on the Internet and I wanted to send you this photo,” the email said in Spanish. ”I am not giving you my name because I like my job and I don’t want to lose it. Juan is OK but I hope he is let out quickly.”

In an interview with Fox New Latino John’s mother Olivia Hammar said, “His eyes look a little lost,” going on to say “It doesn’t look like him. I feel like my blood pressure is through the roof.”

Jon Hammar, 27 of South Florida has not seen been seen since August when he left on an exotic surfing trip to Costa Rica. Jon’s family is pleading for help after their son, a former Marine, was imprisoned in Mexico for being discovered with his grandfathers shotgun. When Jon got to the border between the U.S. and Mexico, agents on the American side waved him through, but their Mexican counterparts immediately arrested him for “possession of a weapon that’s restricted for military use.” It is important to note that Jon did register the gun with U.S. Customs agents before entering Mexico.

Hammar is currently in solitary confinement inside the Matamoros state prison in the northeastern state Mexican state of Tamaulipas, on what his family calls “trumped up charges”.

The parents of Hammar reached out to Tim Johnson of McClatchy Newspapers when American diplomats seemed incapable of helping their son, and they received aggressive calls from the prison from people attempting to extort money. Olivia Hammar fears for her son’s life every day, recalling the night she received a call from a drug lord, demanding money in exchange for her son.

Jon Hammar served 4-years as a U.S. Marine Infantryman. He survived Fallujah and Afghanistan only to come back from the war with PTSD. One of his outlets to help him cope with PTSD was surfing. That is when Hammar and a buddy bought an old mobile home and decided they were going to go on a surfing expedition to Costa Rica.

The Hammar’s say they have written to the U.S. Ambassador in Mexico and reached out to Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio this week, as well as Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
