A lawsuit filed against a Chicago public elementary school alleged that several 6- and 7-year-olds were detained and handcuffed for talking in class.

The Chicago Tribune reported that in March 2010, officials at Carver Primary School allegedly handcuffed the first-graders and held them in an office for an hour, where they were told they "were going to prison and would never see their parents again."

"There appears to be no reason for an officer to isolate 6- and 7-year-old children, place them in handcuffs and threaten them for hours during a school day, or any other day," said attorney Michael Carin, who is representing one of the student's parents.

He added that the lawsuit became necessary after the Chicago Board of Education refused to work with the parents to resolve the case.

The lawsuit seeks more than $100,000 in damages from the Carver Primary School and the Board of Education, claiming the young student suffered injuries both "permanent" and "personal" during the incident.
