The Truth Will Set You Free .....
After being silent for a few days after the incident at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, the NRA broke its silence and said that it was saddened with what happened. It plans to hold a press conference on December 21, 2012
In what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where almost 30 people died with most of the casualties being children between 5 to 10 years of age, there has been much national and international outcry. It has brought up the gun control debate and so forth. Members of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other law-abiding gun owners have found themselves as the major scapegoat and so forth of finger-pointing. Ever since the shooting happened, the NRA has been silent. Hours after the shooting happened, the NRA canceled its "Tweet & Greet" country music concert. Also, it had taken down its Facebook page. For the most part, the NRA had been painted as villains. Yesterday, gun control activists marched towards and demonstrated in front of the NRA offices in Capitol Hill.
While other pro-gun advocates spoke out in defense, the NRA still remained silent. Andrei Nikitchyuk, a parent of one of the students that escaped the violence, spoke at a press conference hosted by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Nikitchyuk had this message for the NRA: "return this country their kids."
LaPierre, who was interrupted by Code Pink protesters twice during a statement (during which he refused to answer questions), said that the students in Newtown might have been better protected had officials at Sandy Hook Elementary been armed. He said that putting a police officer in every single school in America might make schools safer.
"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," he said, asking Congress to immediately appropriate the money to put a police officer in every single school in the country.
The NRA executive's statement was nothing short of defiant in the face of mounting discussion of the need for tighter restrictions on guns — including renewing a ban on assault weapons — in the wake of last week's shooting.
Protesters twice interrupted LaPierre, who will appear this Sunday exclusively on NBC's "Meet the Press," holding signs reading "NRA KILLING OUR KIDS," and screaming that the gun rights group has "blood on its hands."
