Adapted from a speech by Thomas Jefferson: -

"If we run into such debts, as to make it necessary for us to be taxed in our food and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements and for our essential energy, then we must come to labor sixteen hours in every twenty-four; then give the earnings of fifteen of these to the unfit government for their own personal salaries, fiscal debts and daily expenses; then, the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live on oatmeal and potatoes, have no time to think and no means of calling the mis-managers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves out to rivet chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers. 

This is the tendency of all human government.

A departure from principle in one instance becomes precedent for a second, the second for a third and so on 'til the bulk of the society is reduced to be mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering...

"And the fore-horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows, and in its train, 'wretchedness and oppression."
