US Homeland Security allocates $9.7 million to Jewish nonprofits

The Department of Homeland Security has allocated $9.7 million to Jewish organizations and facilities considered vulnerable to terrorist attacks.
The funding, announced last Friday [June 29], came from the DHS's Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which aids nonprofit organizations that are at risk of terrorist threats and helps those organizations coordinate with broader security initiatives.
This round of funding was the program's seventh allocation since its creation in 2005. The program has distributed a total of $128 million during that time, according to a Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) news release.
"We are grateful that the Nonprofit Security Grant Program has emerged to supplement the work of local and federal law enforcement to help keep us safe," said William Daroff, JFNA's vice president for public policy, in the news release. haaretz.com

In 2009, when the white supremacist James W. von Brunn opened fire at the Washington Holocaust Museum, killing a guard, Jewish NGOs received over $9 million out of $15 million allocated to 227 non-profit organizations, aimed to "bolster the security of nonprofit institutions deemed by the Department of Homeland Security to be vulnerable to terrorist attacks." haaretz.com
In 2010, Jewish institutions received $15 million of the total sum of $19 million distributed by Homeland Security. haaretz.com
U.S. President Barack Obama currently has the support of 64% of Jewish registered voters, according to the Gallup polling agency. This is 10% less than the percentage of Jews who voted for Obama in 2008, and is similar to the percentage of Jews who voted for Michael Dukakis when he contended for the presidency against George Bush in 1988. townhall.com
Republican Mitt Romney enjoys 29% support among Jews. townhall.com
Gallup notes the 10-point drop is "five points worse than his decline among all registered voters compared with 2008."
